Introduction
Gaze dynamics is the way each person visually interacts with their environment. It does not describe anatomical structures or specific types of movements, but rather the individual and natural pattern through which we explore the world.
Traditionally, lens design has been based on static parameters such as prescription, centration, and facial morphology. However, vision is a dynamic process: we look, explore, and continuously move our eyes, head, and body. This is where the concept of gaze dynamics becomes essential: understanding how we actually use vision in everyday life.
Gaze dynamics as a unique concept of personalitzation
Gaze dynamics refers to the behavior of the human visual system as individuals direct their gaze toward objects that capture their attention or are relevant to the activity they are performing. It incorporates the dynamic patterns of a person’s visual behavior, including eye movements, head and neck participation, and broader visual exploration strategies. Importantly, it does not describe what we see, but how we direct our gaze to interact with our surroundings.
This pattern of visual behavior is acquired during childhood and continues to evolve throughout life, reflecting the maturation of the visual system, accumulated experience, and environmental demands.
A key aspect of gaze dynamics is that each individual develops a unique visual strategy; a kind of “signature” that determines how attention is allocated, how exploration is organized, and which areas of the environment become prioritized. Studies show that these strategies change with age, with contemporary habits such as intensive screen use, and across generations. This demonstrates that visual exploration is not fixed but adaptive and dynamic.
The origins of gaze dynamics lie in fields such as neuroscience, visual ergonomics, and behavioral research. More recently, the concept has rapidly evolved thanks to analytical tools capable of objectively recording and quantifying visual behavior. As a result, gaze dynamics has progressed from a purely theoretical idea to a phenomenon that can be measured, analyzed, and contextualized across different environmental situations.
When introducing the concept of gaze dynamics, it is essential to consider the role of an unrestricted visual environment: a setting in which individuals can move their eyes and head freely, without limitations that would alter their natural exploratory behavior.
Overall, gaze dynamics is emerging as a central concept for understanding contemporary human vision: a vision no longer analyzed solely through static parameters, but through the way we live, explore, and spontaneously use our gaze in everyday life.
