Innovation built on gaze dynamics for enhanced single-vision personalization and superior visual comfort

mimesys® SV and mimesys® Relax are part of the mimesys® universe, Horizons Optical’s platform that redefines visual personalization based on people’s real gaze dynamics. Beyond approaches based solely on traditional optical parameters, these solutions are conceived from how users look and interact visually in their day-to-day lives—not only from theoretical values or standard wearing positions.

This approach is grounded in the study of gaze dynamics (Gaze Dynamics), a scientific method that analyzes how gaze behaves in real-life situations and brings that everyday visual experience directly into the lens design process. With mimesys® SV and mimesys® Relax, Horizons Optical extends this fully customized visual solutions model to young wearers and pre-presbyopes—visual profiles defined by intensive screen use and constant switching between near, intermediate, and distance vision.

The foundation of mimesys® SV & mimesys® Relax

The Mimesys® single-vision universe is based on the analysis of real adult gaze dynamics records, collected since 20211. In addition, thanks to a collaboration with the Università degli Studi di Milano-Bicocca, gaze dynamics in children have been studied for the first time2. This cross-analysis has made it possible to understand how the user’s gaze behaves in real-life situations and how it evolves with age.

One of the key aspects of this research is the study of the monocular gaze angle and how it changes across different viewing distances. Through analysis of Gaze Dynamics (GD) maps, consistent patterns were identified showing that users do not use only the central zone of the lens for distance vision; instead, they interact significantly with lower regions even in single-vision solutions—especially for near and intermediate tasks. This finding challenges traditional optical models, which are based on theoretical visual behaviors and are predominantly oriented toward distance vision.

In Mimesys® SV and Mimesys® Relax, this approach is implemented through a personalization process built on two key pillars:

  • Gaze dynamicsThe lens design starts from how the user uses their vision in everyday life. Gaze Dynamics is recorded using virtual reality technology (Gaze Analyzer) within a multisensory environment that recreates real visual scenarios and makes it possible to analyze gaze direction and gaze dynamics in different situations.
  • Direct integration into optical designGaze Dynamics data is incorporated directly into the lens calculation, together with the prescription and fitting-position parameters, ensuring the final design is aligned with the user’s real visual behavior—not only with static theoretical models.

Advanced technologies working together

Starting from the measured Gaze Dynamics, mimesys® SV and mimesys® Relax integrate Horizons Optical’s proprietary technologies to bring each user’s real Gaze Dynamics into the final lens design.

Gaze Analyzer: Advanced analysis of gaze dynamics

Gaze Analyzer technology makes it possible to analyze the user’s Gaze Dynamics through virtual reality, recreating real-use situations. Thanks to this measurement, the lens design adapts to how the person looks, moves, and distributes their visual attention in everyday life.

Morphing: Precision and fluid vision

The Morphing technology creates fully customized surfaces based on each user's Gaze Dynamics. It uses data from the mimesys® map, the prescription, the fitting position, and the frame to design a lens from scratch that adapts to the user's specific visual needs.

Optimesh: Instant clarity in all gaze directions and distances

The Optimesh technology allows for compensation of the user's refraction and minimizes oblique astigmatism according to the user’s actual area of visual interest, with special emphasis on improving performance in near vision. For this, optimization is performed in object space, using an object at infinity in the upper area of the lens and a nearby object in the near zone. By focusing the optimization on the areas truly used, superior reduction of oblique astigmatism is achieved in critical areas, improving the user’s perception in distance vision and providing a cleaner, more stable near zone. As a result, after prolonged lens use, the user experiences higher visual quality and greater comfort at the end of the day.

Designed for today’s digital visual habits

mimesys® SV – Single-vision designed from real gaze

mimesys® SV applies the mimesys® approach to the single-vision segment. It is designed based on each user's real Gaze Dynamics, especially relevant for young people who constantly switch between near, intermediate, and distance tasks in digital environments.

By integrating data obtained through virtual reality, mimesys® SV allows adapting the lens design to everyday visual usage, overcoming the traditional approach focused on a single reference distance.

mimesys® Relax – Visual comfort for demanding digital environments

mimesys® Relax expands the mimesys® universe toward solutions aimed at visual comfort and the fatigue associated with intensive screen use. It targets young users and pre-presbyopes whose visual routines are characterized by a high number of near tasks.

Designed from gaze dynamics captured with virtual reality technology, mimesys® Relax aims to enable a more continuous and comfortable visual experience in near and intermediate vision, in line with current visual habits.

A proven and validated approach in new segments

With the launch of mimesys® SV and mimesys® Relax, Horizons Optical extends its fully customized visual solutions approach to new visual profiles. Both solutions have been tested with real users, recording high satisfaction levels, which reinforces the validity of the gaze dynamics-based approach for young people and pre-presbyopes.

To evaluate the performance of Mimesys® single-vision lenses, a study3 with real users was carried out, comparing them with a personalized Free-Form single-vision lens on the market. A double-blind, randomized protocol was followed with 19 users, where each participant used both designs under the same conditions for one week each.

The results after 7 days indicate that the new lenses offer differential and objectively superior performance compared to conventional alternatives. The main improvements over an advanced Free-Form single-vision lens are:

  1. Higher comfort level.
  2. Better near vision.
  3. Better peripheral vision.

Conclusions

mimesys® SV and mimesys® Relax reinforce the global concept of mimesys® as a technology platform where lens design starts from each person’s real gaze dynamics. By integrating gaze dynamics and virtual reality into single-vision solutions, Horizons Optical brings its fully customized visual solutions approach to new segments, maintaining a proposal consistent with current visual habits. The result is a visual experience conceived from how we look and interact visually in our daily lives.
